Disappointment when things don’t quite work out

I have to admit that doing the anonymisation and coding work can be tedious and dare I say it probably pretty boring, but it’s so crucial to a) us actually accessing the texts, and b) us being able to use the texts once we have them. So it was really disappointing when someone who was doing some anonymisation coding for us told us they couldn’t do any more. I started to overanalyse my role in this – they were doing the project work one day a week- on top of their regular work- so did I hassle them too much? Were the instructions we gave not clear enough, or just ridiculously overwhelming in detail? Did they find the work mindnumbingly boring, and was there anything I could have done to change this? Or did they have too much else on in their life that doing this work was just not sustainable? And out of all this, we still have a huge amount of texts we’d like anonymising, so what can I learn and do differently when we hopefully get someone else on board…? Anonymising at arm’s length is not proving easy.
